Dear Bar Patrons,
Wow! Did this year fly by, or what? It’s already holiday season and we have some goodies for you! Please keep in mind that we always have gift certificates available, and they make the PERFECT holiday stocking stuffer.
Client of the Month
Ivone Larson has been a resident of South Lake Tahoe since 1980. Originally from Brazil, she came to the United States as a young child and grew up in the Los Angeles area with a dream to move to the mountains. Ivone has spent most of her life in education, teaching multiple grade levels in our community from Kindergarten through college and in 2006, she became the principal of South Tahoe High School, as well as the Transitional Learning Center (TLC), the Independent Learning Academy (ILA), and Mt. Tallac High School. In 2015, Ivone retired from her position as the Assistant Superintendent for Lake Tahoe Unified School District to spend time with her grandchildren and her husband battling several diseases including the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
Determined to extend the quality of her husband’s life, she began exploring options, consulted numerous medical professionals, and read a variety of research based books and reports, including The China Study, How to Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, The Blue Zones and How Not to Die, as well as viewing numerous documentaries on the subject. Who would have thought that diet and exercise played such a critical role in health and wellness? Realizing to be a caretaker meant she had to improve her own health, and with the support and encouragement of her friends, she started exercising and shifted towards a WFPBNO (Whole Foods Plant Based No Oil) lifestyle. She became certified in WFPBNO cooking and along with Dr. Gregory Bergner, Jean Bergner, June Denney, RDN, provides a hands-on workshop every quarter through Lake Tahoe Community College’s CONNECT Community Education program.
Changing lifelong habits was not easy. Being older and going to that first exercise class was scary, but when she walked in and was welcomed and supported by all her fellow classmates, she became encouraged. Her instructors at The Bar Tahoe gently guided her and provided her with the technical assistance and modifications she needed to be an active participant in all her classes. As a result, she has shed close to 80 pounds, is off all medications, and with the amazing support from her family, friends and this wonderful community, continues her lifelong journey to improved health and wellness. Her advice is to stay positive, eat more plants and just keep moving!
