Summer's Almost Here

Dear Bar Patrons,

Summer is almost here (and school is almost out)! We have some pretty awesome things happening at the studio this summer, so please read to find out more.

JUNE CLIENT OF THE MONTH CASEY COSTA

First and foremost, I am so honored to be the Bar’s June Client of themonth! I have lived in South Lake Tahoe majority of my life. I was born in St. Helena, Ca (the wine country). I moved to South Lake Tahoe in 1994. After high school, I moved to Hollywood, CA, and then to Napa. Eventually making my way back to South Lake. I started working as a medical assistant at a Dermatology/ Cosmetic surgery office. This soon made me realize that healthcare is my passion. I currently work at Stateline Urgent Care, and I absolutely love what I do. I met my husband in 2014. He is originally from Ohio and he moved out here to beautiful South Lake Tahoe.

He swept me off my feet entirely. Two years later he proposed, and together we have a beautiful son named Brody as well as two German Shepherds, Cora and Benson. My whole life I have enjoyed staying active. Living in Tahoe has made that such an easy lifestyle achievement for me, but I couldn’t be more grateful for the Barre! I enjoy the variety of classes that there are., I also love the fact that I can get such an amazing workout early in the morning and then start the rest of my day. I enjoy thelaughs we all have together in class and that we all push each other. Thank you all for choosing me as June client of the month! The Bar has changed my life :)

Do you want to know how to build a strong base? Your feet and legs are a major support to your body and core. We will be learning about foot injuries including plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia, bunions, and other common foot problems. You will walk away know some new ways to help yourself stretch and strengthen the foot and leg produce a more stable base for your running, working out, and just moving around. This will be another moving type workshop so wear comfortable clothes, preferably shorts, and bring your running and workout friends.

Birthday Party for The Bar

We will be offering not one, but two Round Robin classes on Saturday, June 23. Each class will consist of 10-15 minute increments of each of the classes The Bar offers. Plan on bringing shoes for our more cardio-based classes. We can make any of theclasses low-impact, so don’t make any excuses! The classes will run at 8:15 and 10:00 am and will last 1.5 hours.

Later that day, in true bar form, we will have a cocktail party for our clients from 4-6 pm with apps and drinks. We look forward to celebrating you, because without you, we wouldn’t have The Bar.

Jess's June Health Tip

Navigating the oil aisle in our grocery stores can be quite the adventure these days! Shelves are lined with a wide variety of oils, many attached to claims of both health support and health detriment. What does the research actually say?

Replacing saturated fat in our diet with unsaturated fat reduces our risk for cardiovascular disease. Sayonara heart attack and stroke risk! Saturated fats are found in abundance in animal fats such as red meat, cheese, and butter, but there is also a high saturated fat content in tropical oils, including coconut and palm oils. Coconut oil is 91% saturated fat! It is not enough to reduce the saturated fat content of our diets alone, what we replace those fats with is equally important. Often, when individuals attempt to reduce their saturated fat intake, the scale tips toward increased intake of sugar and refined carbohydrates. Intake of refined carbohydrates leads to insulin secretion, which leads to production of saturated fat in the liver.

And…we are unintentionally back to where we began. Replacing saturated fats with oils rich in unsaturated fat will have a positive impact on heart health. Canola, soybean, flaxseed, walnut, avocado, and olive oils are among those that provide heart healthy benefits. Be aware that different oils have different smoke points and storage requirements. Become familiar with these characteristics and empower yourself to choose the heart healthy oils that are best for you and your family. See the links below for more information. Bon appetite!
