Meet our Client of the Month for January! Shana Lucas
Happy New Year to all! I am so excited to be selected as 2018’s first client of the month. Thank you for such an honor! I have been happy to call Tahoe my home for the past 25 years and still take pictures of the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets that never seem to lose their beauty for me. I am a mother of three, one 15 year old daughter and 11 year old twin boys that help keep life very sporty and always full of surprises. I love animals and I have two dogs that believe my sole purpose in life is to take them out on the trails and feed them. I am fortunate to be a first grade teacher at Bijou elementary and am married to a Tahoe boy who grew up here and enjoys a career as a local firefighter. Exercise is very important to me and helps me be the best version of myself both mentally and physically. It’s a hobby that gives back many times what I put into it. The instructors, as well as all my “barre mates” who I feel privileged to call my friends, are so inspiring and make it such a treat every time. I have been attending classes regularly since June of 2016 and I am always happy and thankful after each class. I also enjoy running and surfing and can be found in the water, on the trails or in the streets with my headlamp on. Barre provides the perfect balance to keep me going through it all injury free. Thank you again and I am happy to get to hang out with such a wonderful group of strong, awesome people. Cheers to 2018!!

Jess's Healthy Tip of the Month!
Although the volume of precipitation that we have received thus far this winter has been very mild, the temperatures…not so much! Low temperatures in December were as low as 12◦, requiring wool gloves and a scarf on every dog walk. I still love and cherish getting outside daily so much, and I know you do to! A little warmth will go a long way this winter.
January’s health tip: Grab your favorite mug and sip on a warm beverage to enjoy many health benefits.
OUR BELOVED COFFEE
Over the last several decades, coffee has been studied extensively. Coffee is a good source of riboflavin and phytochemicals that have antioxidant properties. Research has shown that coffee drinkers may have a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, uterine and liver cancers, and cirrhosis. Try yours without the concentrated syrups, sugar, or whipped cream to benefit from the nutrients without making it a wash.
TEA
Tea has been used for medicinal purposes in many cultures, spanning many centuries. The medicinal use of green tea dates back to China 4700 years ago. Numerous phytochemicals in tea are now being studied for their cancer-preventive effects and various studies suggest that these compounds support prevention of cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and have anti-aging properties. Barre plus hot tea equals strength and radiance powerhouse combo! Although many varietals of tea contain beneficial phytochemicals, the concentration of these compounds is higher in high-quality green and white teas than in black tea.
GINGER and TURMERIC HOT CIDER
Warm apple cider…yes, please! The addition of ginger and turmeric to this variety provides both antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Try this recipe below from the American Institute of Cancer Research:
Ingredients
1 cup fresh apple cider
1 tsp. grated fresh ginger
1 tsp. grated fresh turmeric
1½-inch by 1/2-inch strip lemon peel, white part included
Directions:
In a small saucepan, combine cider, ginger, turmeric and lemon peel. Over medium-high heat, heat until ring of bubbles appears around edge of pan, 3 minutes.
Warm beverages are a gift that keeps on giving. Sipping on one may also help you spread the love and improve your mental health this winter . A study published in the journal, Science, revealed that when individuals held a cup of hot (versus iced) coffee they perceived someone in the same room as them as having a “warmer” personality (caring, honest, generous) and when holding a hot (versus cold) therapeutic pad, participants were more likely to purchase a gift for a friend than for themselves. Grab your mug, be well, love well, and enjoy!
